Spikenard essential oil, also called Nard, is steam-distilled from the wild-crafted dried, crushed roots of a perennial growing in the Himalayan region of India. It is said to have a balancing effect on the spiritual, emotional and physical energies and calms the heart and solar plexus. It is also said to have sedative properties similar to valerian oil. Other properties include: Anti-inflammatory, bactericidal;, deodorant, fungicidal, laxative, sedative and tonic.
Traditionally used for thousands of years for skin care, due to being balancing, soothing and rejuvenating. In ancient times, it was regarded to be one of the most costly & precious oils. Mary Magdalene’s use of Spikenard is found in the Bible: “Mary brought in a pound of a very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; the house was full of the scent of the ointment”
